I never really want new gear, but . . .
…I’ve just played a baby blue Nash tele, cosmetically aged to a 1963 Fender tele. The Lollar pickups were bright and sounded fantastic. I also played a custom tele with a flamed top, bound with Rickenbacker style fireglo finish. Seymour Duncan with a Rio Grande Tall Boy I think. I’d be a happy camper with either one of those. I was really testing out a circa 1973 silverface Vibrolux reverb. Footswitchable amp trem is for me. That and reverb are all I need. The thing breaks up quickly at 40 watts. That tele sound through the Vibrolux was as close to Steve Cropper tone as I’ve ever been. The spanky 10 gauge strings were part of the whole too. Now I hear the benefit of lighter strings. I’m used to 13s and I get real pitchy when I play 10s. But I do feel like I’m walking on the moon.
